THE LOWDOWN 

For almost 10 years I have been running several aspects of the Berklee College of Music 5 Week Program.  After learning of the cancellation of all live programs at Berklee this year, I decided to bring my own 5 Week Program to you.....virtually!  You can also attend live!

This 5 week intensive summer program will be an amazing experience for students because of the amount on instruction and the world-class faculty.

Classes will start June 1 and will end July 3, 2020. 

You can attend classes via virtual classrooms or live instruction** at The Drum Set Coach Academy (a brand new facility in Colorado.). Either way, you will learn a lot and have fun.  PLUS...there will be some extra surprises and giveaways.

Henrique De Almeida

Henrique was born and grew up in Brazil.  By the time he was 16, he was touring the world with Brazilian pop star, Alceu Valenca.

He received a Bachelors degree in Jazz Composition and he went on to pursue his Masters in Music Performance degree in Mississippi.  In 1998 he joined the US Air Force and served as an active duty bandsman for 13 years. 

In 2011, Henrique started teaching at Berklee College of Music in Boston and was promoted to Full Professor in 2019. Teaching has always been his passion.  Some of his former students include Stephen Taylor, David Cola, and Dennis Sanderson. 

Henrique has written and published 7 instrucional drum books which are currently being used for all of his classes that are taught at Berklee.  He has also written articles for Modern Drummer magazine.

He has been approached by ABC's "Dancing With The Stars" and has done commercial work with HBO, Victoria's Secret, David Jones Department stores and others.

As a clinician, Henrique has presented and performed at PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) and JEN (Jazz Educators Network).  He also travels around the country doing drum clinics as well as online seminars and webinars.

During his 13 years in the US Air Force, he toured nationally and internationally with the Air Force Academy Falconaires Contemporary Jazz Big Band. He has also performed several times at Carnegie Hall.  Other artists include:  Billy Cobham, Matt Garrison, Bill Summers, Dave Ellefson (Megadeath), Victor Wooton, Leo Blanco, Steve Hunt, Bruce Gertz, Dave Samuels, Jerry Gergonzi, Gloria Estefan, Nat Adderley, Antonio Hart, Stanton Moore, among others.

David Cola is a professional touring drum set player from Cleveland, Ohio, specializing in pop and rock genres. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2017 with a Bachelor’s of Art degree in Professional Music focused in Music Business and Performance. After graduation, he worked for Celebrity Cruises working with artists that ranged in genre from Broadway, West End, and opera singers, to award winning vocalists from television shows including The Voice, The X Factor, and American Idol. David currently resides in Los Angeles, California as of 2019 and works as a touring drummer, teacher, and social media influencer.

Mark Walker

Grammy award winning drummer, composer and educator Mark Walker hails from Chicago, Illinois. He was hired by Paquito D’Rivera in 1989 (with whom he still plays) and Lyle Mays in 1992.  He began touring and recording with the Caribbean Jazz Project in 1995. He also began a musical relationship with pianist Michel Camilo, with whom he still works occasionally. He toured and recorded with the world jazz group, Oregon for 23 years. He also worked with Arturo Sandoval, Cesar Mariano, the WDR, NDR, and HR radio big bands of Germany, Eliane Elias, Andy Narell and many others.

He has been a professor at Berklee since 2005 and in 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy award in the category of best instrumental composition for “Deep Six,” recorded by Oregon. He also developed curriculum for Berklee and Berklee Online and decided to further his studies, graduating in 2019 with a Bachelors in Professional studies from Berklee Online with an interdisciplinary studies major.

Jerry Leake

Jerry Leake is a Professor of World Percussion at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory. He leads the world-rock-fusion octet Cubist that performs compositions from his acclaimed 2010 CD. Jerry is a founding member of the bands Natraj, Club d’Elf and a long-standing member of the Agbekor Drum and Dance Society. He has written eight widely used texts on North and South Indian, West African, and Afro-Cuban percussion, and has published 30+ articles for Percussive Arts Society Magazine. Jerry presented his “Harmonic Time” method at a 2011 TED Talk, and is the owner of Rhombus Publishing.

Neal Smith

Born and raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Neal Smith has been playing drums since the age of five. Neal studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies and Performance, the first African-American to earn a degree in Jazz Studies from the Conservatory.

In addition to his academic training, Neal has studied with Vernell Fournier, Greg Bandy, Paul Samuels, Tom Freer, Bruce Collie, and Gordon Gottlieb. Neal performs regularly in clubs and concert halls, at colleges and universities, and at U.S. and International Jazz Festivals. Neal leads his own group, which performs original compositions as well as classic arrangements of jazz standards. Neal also performs regularly with internationally recognized artists and has shared the stage with the likes of Tom Harrell, Anita Baker, John Hicks, Donald Byrd, Kenny Burrell, Sonny Fortune, Jimmy Owens, Eddie Harris, Isaac Hayes, Gary Bartz, Benny Golson and many others. Beyond performing, Neal loves to teach developing drummers.

He is currently a Professor at Berklee College of Music. Recognizing the need for a record label that focuses exclusively on the production of jazz recordings, Neal founded the NAS label in 2004.

Stephen Taylor

Stephen Taylor is a professional drummer and educator. He is the founder of SDS and the creator of the Drum Better Daily Program. He has toured and recorded with artists like Danielle Peck, Jason Jones, and Meshach Jackson. In addition, he toured and recorded as a member of the rock group Lovers and Liars. Lovers and Liars were signed to Universal Republic Records in 2010 and had multiple songs featured on MTV.

Stephen studied at the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a bachelors degree in Jazz Studies. Along with his online drum lesson website, Stephen has also been a featured educator for companies like DRUM! Magazine, Sweetwater Music, Vic Firth, and Zildjian.

Tony "Thunder" Smith

Tony "Thunder" Smith is a Berklee Professor, world-renowned drummer, vocalist and producer, having worked with some of the most legendary artists of all time.

Today, Tony is touring and recording with Lou Reed, and is endorsed by major drum and percussion companies. He has been involved in a variety of film, commercial and musical projects, both at home in the U.S. and internationally.

Tony has had the honor of performing for President Clinton, President Haval of the Czech Republic and Pope John Paul. His musical opinions are often sought by leading musical publications and his work has been featured in news articles across the globe.

Tony's discography speaks of his ability to handle any kind of musical challenge. From complex instrumental numbers by John McLaughlin to the hard driving Jan Hammer Group, which he co-founded. Tony consistently brings his energy and distinct style to projects, ranging from rock, R&B, funk to fusion, latin, jazz and folk.

His years of experience and understanding of all aspects of the recording and touring process has made him a top choice among producers worldwide. This experience has also enabled him to delve into commercial soundtrack production, where he is actively involved in scoring original music for film and television.
