In the beginning of my career I just had a dream to be able to play like my drum heroes...so I just tried imitating them... Every one was telling me that's what I was supposed to do. There was this false belief and misunderstanding that by watching videos and imitating the drummers I admired, it would eventually transform me into one of them!

What frustrated me was that this system was not really working. I could learn a few things here and there...like a lick or a drum fill, or maybe a groove idea, but that was not translating into getting gigs.

The things I was randomly learning...just like everybody else....were not building a real necessary foundation to become a successful professional drummer.

I was missing the real concepts behind those great players!

I was missing the basic fundamentals.

I was not developing my time, time feel, reading skills, rhythmic interpretation, coordination and so many other important musical skills.

Then.....I started investigating who my favorite drummers studied with.

Where did they go to school?

What were the concepts they developed?

Great drumming and music are not created by only playing licks and fills and copying other drummers or learning a bunch of "quick tips." Great music is inspired by real life experiences that are translated to the audience through artistry and musical skills.

After I graduated from The Berklee College of Music in Jazz Composition, I went on to earn a Masters Degree in Performance from The University Of Southern Mississippi under the amazing Dr. John Wooton. This professional training is the foundation to my life in music education.
